A CT scan, short for Computed Tomography, is like an advanced X-ray that creates detailed pictures of the body. It shows clear images of bones, muscles, fat, and organs, much more detailed than regular X-rays. The machine is connected to a computer that processes these images, which can then be viewed on a screen or printed out.
CT scans are painless and don't require any anesthesia. They use low levels of radiation, much less than other tests like regular X-rays. During the scan, you lie on a table that moves through the machine. Sometimes you'll need to hold your breath for a moment to keep the images clear. The whole process can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour, depending on what part of your body is being checked. Doctors use CT scans to diagnose things like infections, tumors, brain bleeding, spine or organ injuries, and they can even help plan surgeries or guide biopsies to remove tissue samples.

When and Why CT Scan is Prescribed?

Doctors often order a CT scan when they need more detailed information than what they can get from just an X-ray or physical exam. This could be for things like finding tumors, checking for internal bleeding, or seeing if bones are broken. CT scans can also help doctors during procedures like biopsies or draining fluid.
Sometimes, doctors use CT scans to find and diagnose diseases like cancer, stroke, or heart problems. It's like taking a closer look inside your body to see what's going on and how to treat it.

WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE AN CT SCAN?

  • To detect tumors, internal bleeding, broken bones.
  • To diagnose disease such as cancer, stroke and heart disease.
  • To guide physicians and surgeons during biopses, fluid drainage and other treatment.

CT SCAN PROCEDURE

CT scan is a medical test that uses x-rays and computers to take detailed pictures inside your body. You lie on a table while a machine takes pictures from different angles. These pictures are turned into 3-D images on a computer, which your doctor uses to find problems or plan treatments.

The scan itself doesn't hurt and can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour, depending on what's being checked. Sometimes, you might get a special dye through a needle in your arm to make the pictures clearer. After the scan, you can go home and do your usual stuff.

You might feel a bit uncomfortable lying still on the table, and you'll hear buzzing and clicking noises from the machine. But most people don't mind them. Some might feel anxious or cramped inside the machine, but it's over before you know it. If you're allergic to iodine, let your doctor know beforehand, so they can give you medicine to prevent any reactions.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE TAKING A CT SCAN

CT scan is a special type of X-ray that takes detailed pictures of your body in slices. It helps doctors see problems in your bones, muscles, and blood vessels, and find tumors.

Before your scan, know that it uses low-risk radiation. You have to stay still during the scan so the pictures are clear. Sometimes, they'll give you a special dye to make things show up better. It's safe, but your doctor will decide if you need it based on your health.

  • Wear loose and comfortable clothes
  • Eat light food before the scan.
  • If you have any metal implants in your body, please inform your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor before you have an CT scan.

CT scans can detect bone and joint problems, like complex bone fractures and tumors. If you have a condition like cancer, heart disease, emphysema, or liver masses, CT scans can spot it or help doctors see any changes.

Both types of scan have similar uses, but they produce images in different ways. A CT scan uses X-rays, whereas an MRI scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves. CT scans are more common and less expensive, but MRI scans produce more detailed images.
